Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt's plays at the Opéra de Montréal

"Enigma", the psychological thriller by the Franco-Belgian author Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, will be presented this spring at the Opéra de Montreal from April 7th to 13th 2024. This rare production outcomes from a collaboration with the Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole and accompanied by music by French composer Patrick Burgan, is Montreal Opera's first European co-production.

"Enigma" explores the themes of passion, infidelity, truth and lies through a captivating love triangle, recurring themes in Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt's best-selling works. Known for his talents as a playwright, short story writer, novelist, and sometimes even director and actor, the author first made his mark on theatre with plays performed in over 50 countries.

In this version performed in Montreal, 'Enigma' retains all its relevance and dramatic force, offering a captivating theatrical and lyrical experience that will appeal to arts lovers in its various forms.

 

Summary
Do you really know the person you love? In this opera inspired by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt's play Variations énigmatiques, with music composed by Frenchman Patrick Burgan, the psychological plot plunges us into the heart of a strange love triangle where the tension is palpable. Behind closed doors, the two Quebec tenors Antoine Bélanger and Jean-Michel Richer are accompanied by I Musici de Montréal - Orchestre de chambre. This is the Montreal Opera's first co-production with a European company.

  • Performances at Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des arts on April 7, 9, 11 and 13 2024
  • Pre-Opera: One hour before each performance, ticket holders will be able to attend a free pre-concert presentation hosted by musicologist Pierre Vachon, in the Salon Urbain at Place des arts.
